Kunsthistorisches Museum
Vienna's great museum holds the Habsburg dynasty's art, including the world's largest collection of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, with his Tower of Babel and Hunters in the Snow, as well as Vermeer's Art of Painting.
History of the museum
The Habsburg emperors, who ruled much of Europe, collected for centuries. Emperor Franz Joseph ordered a pair of matching museums to be built on the Ringstrasse, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum opened in 1891, facing a twin building for natural history. The sumptuous interior has paintings by Klimt in the stairwell.
