Christ Carrying the Cross
Hieronymus Bosch · 1500
Why it's great
Christ's calm face is surrounded by a crowd of ugly, shouting people, all squeezed into one small painting. Hieronymus Bosch painted it in about 1500, and the faces of the crowd are some of the most mocking ever painted.

Hieronymus Bosch was a Dutch painter, born in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch around 1450. He lived there all his life and painted strange, crowded visions of heaven, hell and human foolishness filled with monsters and tiny details. He died in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1516.
