Madonna of Chancellor Rolin

Jan van Eyck · 1500

Why it's great

A rich chancellor kneels as Mary and the baby Jesus appear in front of him, while behind them a wide river and city stretch into the distance. Jan van Eyck painted it in about 1435. It is full of tiny details, like a bridge with tiny people.
