Portrait of a Man (Self-Portrait?)

Jan van Eyck · 1433

Why it's great

A man in a bright red turban looks out at you with a steady gaze. Jan van Eyck probably painted this portrait of himself in 1433, and there is a motto on the frame that means 'As I can', which is a play on his name.
