Lucca Madonna

Jan van Eyck · 1437

Why it's great

Mary sits on a throne, and she feeds the baby Jesus while the cloth behind her glows in rich red. Jan van Eyck painted it in about 1437, and it is named for the Italian city of Lucca where it was once kept.
