Städel Museum
Frankfurt's art museum holds 700 years of European art, from the Middle Ages to today, with work by Vermeer, Botticelli, Monet and Beckmann.
History of the museum
The banker Johann Friedrich Städel left his art collection and fortune in 1815 to found an art institute, one of the first museums in Germany created by a private citizen rather than a ruler. The museum grew with gifts from citizens of Frankfurt. A garden hall for modern art was built beneath the museum's courtyard in 2012.
