Lenbachhaus

📍 Munich, Germany · Founded 1929

A villa in Munich with the world's most important collection of the Blue Rider group, including Kandinsky, Marc, Macke and Gabriele Münter, who brought their colors to modern art.

History of the museum

The painter Franz von Lenbach built the Italian-style villa in 1887, and after his death it became a city gallery in 1929. In 1957 Gabriele Münter, Kandinsky's partner, gave the museum about a thousand works by Kandinsky and her friends that she had hidden from the Nazis. The villa was expanded with a golden-colored extension in 2013.
