Alte Pinakothek
One of the world's oldest and greatest galleries of Old Master paintings, with works by Dürer, Rubens, Rembrandt, Raphael and Leonardo, housed in a huge brick-red building in the museum quarter of Munich.
History of the museum
King Ludwig I of Bavaria wanted to open the royal collections to the public, and he had the architect Leo von Klenze build the museum, which opened in 1836. It was one of the largest museums in the world when it was built, and many later galleries copied its design. It was badly damaged in the Second World War and rebuilt in the 1950s.
