Lamentation of Christ
Albrecht Dürer · 1500
Why it's great
Friends crowd around Christ's body at the foot of the cross, weeping, as dark clouds fill the sky. Albrecht Dürer painted it in about 1500, and the faces show deep sadness.

Albrecht Dürer was a German artist born in Nuremberg in 1471. He was a painter, but he is most famous for his woodcuts and engravings, which made him known across Europe, and for traveling to Italy to learn from Renaissance artists. He lived mostly in Nuremberg and died there in 1528.
