Albrecht Dürer · 1504
Why it's great
The three kings kneel before the baby Jesus in a crumbling ruin, with a green countryside through the arches. Albrecht Dürer painted it in 1504, and he painted a self-portrait in the group on the right.

Albrecht Dürer was a German artist born in Nuremberg in 1471. He was a painter, but he is most famous for his woodcuts and engravings, which made him known across Europe, and for traveling to Italy to learn from Renaissance artists. He lived mostly in Nuremberg and died there in 1528.
