Uffizi Gallery
The world's top museum of Renaissance art is in a long Florentine palace beside the Arno river, with Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Primavera, works by Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo, and a priceless collection of Italian masters.
History of the museum
The word uffizi means offices. Cosimo I de' Medici had the building put up in 1560 to hold the government's offices, and the Medici family used the top floor to display their art from about 1581. The last Medici, Anna Maria Luisa, left everything to the city of Florence in 1737 on condition that it never leave Tuscany, which is why the masterpieces are still there. The gallery opened to the public in 1769. In 1993 a bomb damaged part of the building, and many paintings were repaired.
