Madonna of the Goldfinch
Raphael · 1505
Why it's great
Mary sits in a meadow with the baby Jesus and the young John the Baptist, who gives Jesus a goldfinch. Raphael painted it in about 1505, and the bird is a sign of Christ's suffering. The painting broke in a house collapse and was carefully repaired.

Raphael was an Italian painter born in Urbino in 1483. He moved to Rome as a young man and painted frescoes for the Pope, as well as many gentle Madonnas and portraits, and was admired for the grace and balance of his work. He died in 1520, at the age of 37.
