Pietà

Giovanni Bellini · 1505

Why it's great

Mary holds the lifeless Christ, with a calm sky and a glowing landscape behind them. Giovanni Bellini painted it in about 1505, and the stone-gray tones and soft light make the sorrow feel still and quiet.
