Transfiguration of Christ
Giovanni Bellini Β· 1478
Why it's great
Christ glows with white light on a mountain while Moses and Elijah stand beside him, and his friends cower below. Giovanni Bellini painted it in about 1478, and the green hills and quiet sky in the back are as beautiful as anything in his career.

Giovanni Bellini was a Venetian painter, born in Venice around 1430 into a family of painters. He was the teacher of Giorgione and Titian and led Venetian painting into the High Renaissance with his glowing colors and quiet, thoughtful Madonnas. He worked in Venice all his life and died there in 1516.
