Saint Francis in the Desert
Giovanni Bellini Β· 1480
Why it's great
A friar in a brown robe stands outside his cave, looking up into the light with his arms open. Giovanni Bellini painted it in about 1480, and the landscape, with its rocky hills, donkey and tiny town, is as important as the saint.

Giovanni Bellini was a Venetian painter, born in Venice around 1430 into a family of painters. He was the teacher of Giorgione and Titian and led Venetian painting into the High Renaissance with his glowing colors and quiet, thoughtful Madonnas. He worked in Venice all his life and died there in 1516.
