Saint Mark Preaching in Alexandria
Giovanni Bellini Β· 1500
Why it's great
Saint Mark preaches to a crowd in front of buildings in Alexandria, and there are camels, turbans and a giraffe-like pillar. Gentile Bellini started it and his brother Giovanni finished it in about 1500, and it mixes Venetian and Eastern buildings.

Giovanni Bellini was a Venetian painter, born in Venice around 1430 into a family of painters. He was the teacher of Giorgione and Titian and led Venetian painting into the High Renaissance with his glowing colors and quiet, thoughtful Madonnas. He worked in Venice all his life and died there in 1516.
