The Test of Fire of Moses
Giorgione Β· 1505
Why it's great
A baby Moses is offered a choice between burning coals and a golden crown in front of a king. Giorgione painted it in about 1505, and the baby chooses the coals, so he is saved from being thought a threat.

Giorgione was a Venetian painter born around 1478, who died very young, around 1510. He painted dreamy landscapes and moody portraits, and only a handful of his works survive. His soft style helped shape the work of his friend Titian.
