Judith
Giorgione Β· 1504
Why it's great
A woman in a red dress stands with her foot on the head of an enemy general and holds a sword, with a calm, gentle look. Giorgione painted it in about 1504, and it shows the Bible heroine Judith.

Giorgione was a Venetian painter born around 1478, who died very young, around 1510. He painted dreamy landscapes and moody portraits, and only a handful of his works survive. His soft style helped shape the work of his friend Titian.
