Cutting the Stone
Hieronymus Bosch Β· 1503
Why it's great
A doctor cuts into a man's head to remove the stone of madness, but what he pulls out is a flower. Hieronymus Bosch painted it in 1503, and it was a joke about quack doctors who cheat foolish people.

Hieronymus Bosch was a Dutch painter, born in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch around 1450. He lived there all his life and painted strange, crowded visions of heaven, hell and human foolishness filled with monsters and tiny details. He died in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1516.
