Temptation of Saint Anthony
Hieronymus Bosch Β· 1501
Why it's great
Saint Anthony kneels in a wild landscape, surrounded by demons, flying fish, burning buildings and bizarre creatures. Hieronymus Bosch painted this triptych in about 1501, and it is a nightmare full of jokes.

Hieronymus Bosch was a Dutch painter, born in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch around 1450. He lived there all his life and painted strange, crowded visions of heaven, hell and human foolishness filled with monsters and tiny details. He died in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1516.
