An Allegory of Intemperance

Hieronymus Bosch Β· 1500

Why it's great

A fat man's head peeps out of a hollow, and monsters, a big barrel and an owl crowd around in this bizarre scene. Hieronymus Bosch painted it in about 1500, and it is a funny warning against eating and drinking too much.
