The Tempest
Giorgione Β· 1506
Why it's great
A soldier stands on one side and a woman nurses a baby on the other, with a dark storm brewing over a small town and a lightning bolt in the sky. Giorgione painted it in about 1506, and no one knows what the story is, which is why it is called one of the first modern landscapes.

Giorgione was a Venetian painter born around 1478, who died very young, around 1510. He painted dreamy landscapes and moody portraits, and only a handful of his works survive. His soft style helped shape the work of his friend Titian.
