La Belle Ferronnière

Leonardo da Vinci · 1495

Why it's great

A young woman in a red dress looks sideways with a calm, cool gaze, behind a stone ledge. Leonardo da Vinci painted this in about 1495, and the name refers to a mistaken story that she was the wife of an ironmonger.
