Portrait of the Artist Holding a Thistle
Albrecht Dürer · 1493
Why it's great
A young man in a red cap holds a thistle, a spiky flower, in his hand and looks right at you. Albrecht Dürer painted this self-portrait in 1493 when he was 22, and he may have sent it to his bride-to-be.

Albrecht Dürer was a German artist born in Nuremberg in 1471. He was a painter, but he is most famous for his woodcuts and engravings, which made him known across Europe, and for traveling to Italy to learn from Renaissance artists. He lived mostly in Nuremberg and died there in 1528.
