Self-Portrait
Albrecht Dürer · 1498
Why it's great
A young man in an elegant white shirt and a fancy cap looks right at you, with a landscape through the window behind. Albrecht Dürer painted it in 1498, when he was 26, and wanted to show that he was a gentleman, not a mere craftsman.

Albrecht Dürer was a German artist born in Nuremberg in 1471. He was a painter, but he is most famous for his woodcuts and engravings, which made him known across Europe, and for traveling to Italy to learn from Renaissance artists. He lived mostly in Nuremberg and died there in 1528.
