Feast of the Rosary
Albrecht Dürer · 1506
Why it's great
Mary, the baby Jesus, the Pope and the Emperor give crowns of roses to the people kneeling in front of them. Albrecht Dürer painted it in 1506 for German merchants in Venice, and he included his own self-portrait in the crowd.

Albrecht Dürer was a German artist born in Nuremberg in 1471. He was a painter, but he is most famous for his woodcuts and engravings, which made him known across Europe, and for traveling to Italy to learn from Renaissance artists. He lived mostly in Nuremberg and died there in 1528.
