Madonna del Prato

Raphael · 1505

Why it's great

Mary sits in a green meadow, holding the baby Jesus, while the young John the Baptist hands him a cross. Raphael painted it in 1505 when he was about 22, and the triangle of figures makes it feel calm and balanced.
