Madonna della Seggiola
Raphael · 1513
Why it's great
Mary holds the baby Jesus tight in a round picture, with the young John the Baptist on the right. Raphael painted it in about 1513, and the round shape makes the figures seem to hug.

Raphael was an Italian painter born in Urbino in 1483. He moved to Rome as a young man and painted frescoes for the Pope, as well as many gentle Madonnas and portraits, and was admired for the grace and balance of his work. He died in 1520, at the age of 37.
