Portrait of a Lady with a Unicorn
Raphael · 1505
Why it's great
A young woman in a red dress sits with a little unicorn in her lap, in front of a window with a landscape. Raphael painted it in about 1505, and a lot of people think a painted-over lamb was changed to a unicorn.

Raphael was an Italian painter born in Urbino in 1483. He moved to Rome as a young man and painted frescoes for the Pope, as well as many gentle Madonnas and portraits, and was admired for the grace and balance of his work. He died in 1520, at the age of 37.
