Portrait of Bishop Bernardo de' Rossi
Lorenzo Lotto Β· 1505
Why it's great
A bishop in a black robe looks out with a worried face, and a sliding cover hides his portrait. Lorenzo Lotto painted it in 1505, and the sliding cover, painted with a scene of a tree and a snake, shows that the bishop's face was only meant to be seen when he wanted.

Lorenzo Lotto was a Venetian painter born in 1480, who traveled a lot and painted psychologically sharp portraits. His religious paintings have a quirky charm. He died in Loreto in 1556.
