Portrait of a gentleman in his studio
Lorenzo Lotto Β· 1530
Why it's great
A man sits at his desk, turning to look at the viewer, with a ring, a letter and a view of the room around him. Lorenzo Lotto painted it in about 1530, and the details of the table are meant to tell about his life.

Lorenzo Lotto was a Venetian painter born in 1480, who traveled a lot and painted psychologically sharp portraits. His religious paintings have a quirky charm. He died in Loreto in 1556.
