Lucas Cranach the Elder was a German painter born in Kronach in 1472. He became court painter to the rulers of Saxony in Wittenberg, was a close friend of Martin Luther, and ran a busy workshop that made portraits, religious scenes and the first Protestant images. He died in Weimar in 1553.
