The Martyrdom of Saint Barbara

Lucas Cranach the Elder Β· 1510

Why it's great

A young woman kneels in a beautiful forest while a man raises a sword over her. Lucas Cranach the Elder painted it in about 1510, and it is a lovely, quiet picture of a dark story.
