The Baptism of Christ
Joachim Patinir Β· 1510
Why it's great
Jesus is baptized in a calm river, which winds through a huge landscape with hills, rocks and towns. Joachim Patinir painted it in about 1510, and he was one of the first artists to make landscape the main part of the picture.

Joachim Patinir was a Flemish painter, born around 1475. He is often called the first landscape painter in European art, since in his pictures vast rocky landscapes take up more room than the religious figures. He died in Antwerp in 1524.
