Landscape with Charon Crossing the Styx
Joachim Patinir Β· 1515
Why it's great
The boatman Charon rows a lost soul across the River Styx, with heaven on one side and hell on the other. Joachim Patinir painted it in about 1515, and the dark and light sides of the landscape split the picture.

Joachim Patinir was a Flemish painter, born around 1475. He is often called the first landscape painter in European art, since in his pictures vast rocky landscapes take up more room than the religious figures. He died in Antwerp in 1524.
