Emperor Maximilian I
Albrecht Dürer · 1519
Why it's great
An emperor in a fur coat and big hat looks sideways, and a pomegranate, a symbol of power, is in his hand. Albrecht Dürer painted it in 1519, shortly after Maximilian died, working from a drawing he'd made earlier.

Albrecht Dürer was a German artist born in Nuremberg in 1471. He was a painter, but he is most famous for his woodcuts and engravings, which made him known across Europe, and for traveling to Italy to learn from Renaissance artists. He lived mostly in Nuremberg and died there in 1528.
