Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand
Albrecht Dürer · 1508
Why it's great
A crowd of people in bright clothes are being killed in a rocky landscape in this huge, busy picture. Albrecht Dürer painted it in 1508, and in the lower corner he painted himself and a friend in black, watching.

Albrecht Dürer was a German artist born in Nuremberg in 1471. He was a painter, but he is most famous for his woodcuts and engravings, which made him known across Europe, and for traveling to Italy to learn from Renaissance artists. He lived mostly in Nuremberg and died there in 1528.
