Judgement of Cambyses
Gerard David Β· 1498
Why it's great
A king sits in judgment while a cruel punishment happens in the background, in a painting meant to warn judges in the city of Bruges. Gerard David painted it in 1498, and it is one of the grimmest paintings of the Renaissance.
