The Battle of Anghiari

Leonardo da Vinci · 1503

Why it's great

Horsemen and soldiers fight over a banner in a whirl of fury. Leonardo da Vinci painted this on a wall in Florence in about 1503, but it was lost, and we only know it from copies, like this one.
