Lady with an Ermine

Leonardo da Vinci · 1490

Why it's great

A young woman cradles a white, stoat-like animal called an ermine in her arm, and both of them turn to look at something off to the side. Leonardo da Vinci painted Cecilia Gallerani in about 1490, and the animal was a symbol of purity and also a pun on her name.
