The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne

Leonardo da Vinci · 1511

Why it's great

Mary sits on the lap of her mother, Saint Anne, reaching toward her baby, who is playing with a lamb. Leonardo da Vinci painted it in about 1511, and the pyramid of three figures, with the misty rocks behind, is a masterpiece.
