Sistine Madonna
Raphael · 1512
Why it's great
Mary glides forward on a cloud, holding her baby, while Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara kneel below. Two little angels lean on a ledge at the bottom, and Raphael painted it in about 1512, and the angels are now famous all over the world on postcards.

Raphael was an Italian painter born in Urbino in 1483. He moved to Rome as a young man and painted frescoes for the Pope, as well as many gentle Madonnas and portraits, and was admired for the grace and balance of his work. He died in 1520, at the age of 37.
