Netherlandish Proverbs

Pieter Brueghel the Elder · 1559

Why it's great

Dozens of people in a village act out proverbs: one man bangs his head on a wall, another throws money into a river, and a man tries to cut something with a knife on a roof. Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted this in 1559, and over a hundred sayings are hidden in it.
