The Triumph of Death

Pieter Brueghel the Elder Β· 1560

Why it's great

Skeleton armies attack the living in a burnt, bare landscape, with graves, wheels and ships in the distance. Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted it in about 1560, and no one escapes, not kings, soldiers or lovers.
