The Misanthrope

Pieter Brueghel the Elder Β· 1568

Why it's great

An old man in black walks along, scowling, while a thief cuts his purse from behind him, and a tiny man sits in a glass ball. Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted it in 1568, and the Latin text says that because the world is faithless, I go in mourning.
