The Bean Eater
Annibale Carracci · 1580
Why it's great
A farmer sits at a table with a bowl of beans, a loaf of bread and a glass of wine, and he looks up as if you've interrupted his meal. Annibale Carracci painted it in about 1583, and it is one of the first paintings of an ordinary working man.

Annibale Carracci was an Italian painter born in Bologna in 1560. He and his brother and cousin founded an art school that brought back the clear, natural style of the Renaissance, and he painted the ceiling of the Farnese Gallery in Rome. He died in 1609.
