The Surrender of Breda

Diego Velázquez · 1635

Why it's great

A Spanish general holds out his hand to a Dutch commander who is handing over the keys to a city, with a forest of spears behind. Diego Velázquez painted it in 1635, and instead of boasting, the winner is shown being kind to the loser.
