Rape of the Sabine Women

Pietro da Cortona Β· 1627

Why it's great

Roman soldiers carry off women from a neighboring city, in a crowded, twisting scene in a Roman square. Pietro da Cortona painted it in about 1627, and it tells a legend from Rome's early history.
