The Trojan Women Setting Fire to Their Fleet

Claude Lorrain · 1643

Why it's great

Women set fire to their own ships on a beach, to stop the long journey, as the sun sets over the sea. Claude Lorrain painted it in about 1643, and the story is from Virgil's Aeneid.
