The Judgment of Solomon
Nicolas Poussin · 1649
Why it's great
King Solomon sits on a throne and points, deciding between two women who both say a baby is theirs, as a soldier holds the child. Nicolas Poussin painted it in 1649, and the true mother's face shows her love for the baby.

Nicolas Poussin was a French painter born in Les Andelys in 1594. He moved to Rome as a young man and spent most of his life there, painting calm, well-planned scenes from ancient history and mythology that set the standard for classical painting. He died in Rome in 1665.
